The Office of Admissions and Registrar website offers information about registration. When you are signing up for your courses at the beginning of each quarter, there are two steps to the registration process:
- Registration
- Filing a study list
The difference between the two is that registration is the process by which you notify the registrar of your intent to take classes. Filing a study list is the actual process through which you sign up for particular classes.
Registration
Log on to the UCSF Student Portal using the user name and pin provided to you when you first arrived at UCSF. At the beginning of each quarter, you MAY be prompted to verify your intent to enroll for the quarter. If you don't see this prompt, don't be concerned unless you are later unable to file your study list, at which time you should notify the DSCB office. That's it. Your fees will be paid by the BMS program, so your registration and study list will not be placed on hold; however, if you see that your fees continue to be shown as unpaid, please notify the program coordinator.
Filing your Study List
Filing a study list is the actual process through which you sign up for particular classes. The study list is the official record of all courses for which a student is accountable. Credit will not be awarded for courses not listed. You will need to be vigilant and file the study list at the appropriate time. In order to file your study list, you will need to go online to the Student Portal. Log on using the user name and pin provided to you when you first arrived at UCSF. When you are finished, be sure to click the "Submit" button or the process will not be complete. If this happens, you may miss the deadline and be charged the late fee. Again, this fee will not be reimbursed to you by the program.
Filing a Study List FAQs
How can I find out which courses are required and when they are offered?
Information regarding required courses may be found on the main DSCB website. The DSCB office will email you details about what courses to register for each quarter.
You can find information about other courses at UCSF on the Registrar’s online course catalog.
How many credits do I register for?
- You are required to enroll for no less than 8 units each quarter.
- Individual courses (1 to 4 units)
- Thesis research, once you have selected a thesis lab (1-8 units, this should be listed as DSCB 250 on study lists)
- Journal club - DSCB 216 (1 unit)
- DSCB Seminars - DSCB 217 (1 unit)
- Research rotations DSCB 215 (3 units)
What if the course I want to take doesn't show on line? What if the instructor's name is not shown?
First, be sure to check the "All Instructors" list. If this does not resolve the problem, please inform the program coordinator immediately, who will take steps with the registrar's office to remedy the problem. UCSF is hiring new faculty all the time, so chances are good your instructor has simply not been added to the instructor database yet.
How can I find out what the deadline is to file my study list?
The deadlines are available on the Registrar's website.
Can I audit a course for a few days before I decide to file it on my study list?
Yes, but be sure to get permission from the course director or offering program. The deadline for filing your study list is usually not for a few weeks until after the quarter starts. This extended study list filing period is offered in lieu of a traditional adds/drops period.
